Sake Nation: “Massive Wildfires and Sake Breweries in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture: Part III”

The largest wildfire in Japan in 50 years scorched Ofunato city, Iwate prefecture. Aid was sent to many heavily afflicted victims from throughout Japan and worldwide. Thank you very much for your staunch support.
This issue reports on donations received from the U.S.
Donations are deeply rooted in North American culture, with many who donated to victims of the California wildfires.
Japanese companies in San Diego - sushi restaurants, ramen shops, etc. - held events selling their original brand of sake, planned events to fundraise for donations at their restaurants and shops, and collected a large donation to aid victims of the recent wildfires in Ofunato city.
Residents of Ofunato city were deeply grateful to receive the heartwarming support from many donors in San Diego.
Japan must learn from the custom of giving donations, practiced in the U.S. Donations in the U.S. are not only given by the affluent, as donors contribute what they can, some maybe a few dollars. We cannot say thank you enough for the kindness demonstrated by American nationals; their deep empathy felt for the pain of our victims in Ofunato city.
Looking back, I recall large donations came in to aid victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake from many American and Japanese nationals living in the U.S.
In Japan, a lot of donations are collected right after disaster strikes. However, the victims are just as quickly forgotten. Disaster-affected areas are always shocked by “how quickly the disaster is forgotten.”
Ofunato city still faces a long road ahead to recover and rebuild. Thank you in advance for your ongoing support.

岩手県大船渡市の日本最大規模の林野火災。多くの被害を受けた被災者に日本中、そして世界中からたくさんの支援が届いています。本当にありがとうございます。
その中でも今回アメリカの支援をご紹介したいと思います。
アメリカはドネーションの文化が根付いており、カリフォルニアの火災でも多くの方々が被災した方々に寄付をしていました。
今回、大船渡市の林野火災を受けて、カリフォルニアのサンディエゴにある、寿司屋さん、ラーメン屋さんなどを展開する日系の会社が、自社の酒のイベントや、お店でドネーションの企画をしてくれて、多くの寄付金を集めていただきました。
たくさんのサンディエゴの方々の温かい支援は大船渡市に届き、本当に皆さん喜んでいます。
アメリカのこういった寄付の文化、日本でも見習わなければいけません。裕福な人だけが寄付するのではなく、数ドルの寄付でもしてくれる。アメリカ人の優しさ、人の痛みを自分の痛みとして考えられる気持ちの深さ、本当に感謝しかありません。
思いおこせば東日本大震災でも多くのアメリカ人、アメリカに住む日本人からたくさんの支援をいただきました。
日本では発災当初は寄付などもたくさん集まるのですが、忘れるのも早く、被災地はいつもこの「忘れる早さ」にショックを受けています。
まだまだ復興には長い時間のかかる大船渡市。是非これからも応援をよろしくお願いします。
